Awapuni Kindergarten closes

Awapuni Kindergarten closed its doors for the last time this afternoon - exactly 44 years after it first opened. Built at a cost of $35,000 the kindergarten was opened on 5th July 1975 by Prime Minister Robert Muldoon and has provided a valuable and much-loved service in the heart of Awapuni for so many families, including second and third generations.

Sadly, due to increased competition, enrolments have steadily declined and the kindergarten has lost over $168K in six year...s. Fortunately we have been able to transfer our tamariki and teachers to other Ruahine services.

Our Board, CEO and staff sincerely thank the many families, colleagues, former colleagues, committee members and Board members  who have supported Awapuni Kindergarten over the years.

We ended this era with a beautiful blessing from Papa Anaru our kaumatua and short speech from Board Chair Dr Penny Smith.  It was great to have former Head Teachers Kim Stewart and Barbara Gibson join us, as well as former teacher Sara Ale 'skyping' in.

Last to leave were our last two permanent team members - Chris Hudson and Fiona Craw - caring for their community and tying up loose ends right to the end   The future of the building and grounds is yet to be decided.
